10.29.11 | Another book of novellas. Typical quality for King's recent work. Good, harsh, dark. I feel like with his short stories he has less of a pull to inject twists and turns in the story so a few of them end up feeling surprisingly straight-forward. I remember thinking the same thing about one of the stories in his last collection (the one with the running girl). Big Driver goes exactly where you think it will go, but that's not a bad thing because it's also where you want it to go. Same with 1922 and Fair Extension. I guess really all the stories. Anyway, I enjoyed the book although it definitely twitched my horror nerve. Some of the stuff that happens makes you feel kind of dirty. King starts his Afterward by saying these stories are harsh. I agree. |
