05.30.13 | Bunch of chapters about the seedy underbelly of Hollywood in the Fifties. I probably wishlisted this book or picked it up on impulse or got it as a gift because of a James Ellroy quote on the front. The first chapter, all about Confidential magazine and Robert Harrison, is very promising, even with a grisly true crime murder scene photo at the end, but from there it kind of gets less and less sordid. It's very anecdotal, so the chapters dealing with sujects I was interested in were engrossing but the chapters I didn't care as much about really slogged. Still, it gave a nice little peek into the last days of the classic Hollywood studio system. This is terrible but I wish there was more dirt. Still a decent read though... especially the Sweet Smell of Success and Sunset Boulevard chapters. |
