| 07.11.16 | The end of the Mr. Mercedes trilogy, which I feel like was a trilogy just because King wanted to write a trilogy. Like he's channeling a mystery author for a while. This wasn't bad... but it did feel to me like he stretched a whole book out of a single idea. I think I liked Finders Keepers the best out of the bunch. I mean I still love the writing and will probably read anything King puts out until one of us is dead, but I do kind of feel like he's getting soft in his old age. I can't really remember the last book that felt like it was actively trying to scare me. Perhaps Duma Key? I mean yes, Mr Mercedes had a Michael Connelly-esque villian and it's scary to be in that guy's head and think that people like that are out there... and this one introduced some supernatural elements that I suppose were intended to magnify that fear but really, what's the fear of in this book? a website? Human nature and the fact that we sometimes commit suicide? A far cry from a clown in the sewers with glowing eyes saying "they all float down here." And i'm not entirely unhappy about this. I mean, the guy's written a thousand books... it's natural for his interests to shift with time. But these days I feel like a Stephen King book is less an automatic scare-fest and more just a ultra-readable drama with a couple grisly paragraphs. Can't wait to read the next one. |
