04.06.21 Catching up on Stephen King. This is a collection of novellas, which I usually enjoy. His short stories are some of the few that I like as well, although short stories don't really stick around in my memory. These 80-200 page stories have a little length to them but still the anything-goes feel of a shorter work. It is funny that most authors would probably call the titular story as a short novel and publish it on its own, but whatever. Unfortunately, I didn't love half of these. I thought Life of Chuck was pretty cluttered. I'd have liked it a lot more if it was just the first part with a tiny bit more clarification at the end and not bothered with the second and third. And Rat was kinda... familiar? Lots of description for an already-trod premise. There might be a tiny bit of writerly insight? I guess more ambitious writers really do struggle with word choice a lot? But in the end what you guess would happen happens and not much else. Even If It Bleeds is a little bit strained. I liked the premise but the whole elevator scheme at the end is way too played up for what is objectively a terrible plan. Kind of a disappointment after how much I liked The Outsider. But you know... they still read like butter and his characters live on the page. Definitely still in the not-a-waste-of-time category.
