| 06.19.21 | Weir's third book. This one's about a guy who wakes up on a space ship with amnesia, so the book unfolds as he discovers his surroundings and why he's there along with the requisite backstory being covered by random memories coming back to him. I liked this a lot. I remember liking Artemis as well but not as much as The Martian because his female point of view felt too forced. With this, it's still more or less Weir's voice as the protagonist (this time he happens to be a school teacher / scientist rather than an astronaut or a lunar welder(?)) but that's ok with me because the book reads a lot like a science-nerd's stream of thought which is what Andy Weir writing a book actually is. So in that regard I got plenty of Martian vibes, just with a different setting and different problems to solve, but the subject matter was different enough that I never thought it was re-treading. The really cool stuff is the alien whatnots that he presents and deals with. It all seems well past my threshold of suspension of disbelief to the point where it all felt super plausible to me. And since I don't read a ton of sci-fi, that's really what I'm looking for. Some cool ideas grounded in reality, a good story probably involving space or something, and written well enough where I know what's going on. And this book is definitely all three of those. So I definitely liked it more than Artemis. Can't be sure about The Martian... I want to say that still edges this one out but it's a close second. Like I said, I liked it a lot. I actually welled up at the end. |
