10.08.22 | New Stephen King. This one... I went in blind which I think is good. The first third works in typical King fashion. At this point, he could write a story about a guy drinking a glass of water and by the time the glass is empty you'd love the guy. But then there's the second two thirds... it makes me wonder why the beginning bit had to be so long (maybe so you love the main character, maybe so you don't completely check out with the remainder), but it followed a very odd cadence for me. For the record, I'm still reading every King book and still think he excels at churning these readable engaging books out, but I also think he's an old man now and his edge is gone. We're never going to get another 'Salem's Lot out of him, and we're DEFINITELY not getting another Pet Sematary. Which is fine. I'm fine with that... but when you structure the book in the first person as the protagonist telling you the story, and you make it about a boy and his dog... you know several things right off the bat, and if those things prove to not be true then the book has lied to you and people won't like it. So with those assumptions, the whole second act is protracted since it's almost predestined that the main character will get out of any danger he may be in. So the overall vibe of the last two-thirds of the book reminded me of playing a video game on Easy difficulty. I still liked it. I was never bored, I can think of many King books that I'd rank this above... but i dunno... it also felt kind of minor. Destined for the middle of the group. Especially after how much I've liked a couple recent ones from him like The Outsider and The Institute, this one didn't hit quite as hard for me. |
